Be Not Afraid: Refuge in the Upside-Down Kingdom

In Luke 1:26–38, the angel Gabriel announces that God has seen the suffering of his people and that the long-awaited kingdom is arriving—not through domination, but through a teenage girl in an overlooked town. Mary’s courageous “yes” reveals that God’s rescue will not mirror the violence of empire, but will come through humility, incarnation, and ultimately the cross. Advent invites us to move from “How long, O Lord?” to “May it be so with me,” trusting that God’s way of restoration is better than our instincts for power.
